AISH & PDD Assessment

Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) application. This is an application for financial support for life to the limitations caused by a particular special need. Forest Psychological is here to assist families in assessing if their family member meets the requirements to qualify for AISH and PDD in the province of Alberta through extensive knowledge and experience with this provincial assistance program.

Psychoeducational Assessment

Psychoeducational assessments are done to analyze why a young person may not be reaching their optimal level of academic success. These assessments may be useful in teasing out learning disabilities, and in enlightening parents, teachers and others in understanding behaviours, learning needs and other challenges.

Capacity Assessment

Because all individuals in the province of Alberta become their own guardians when they reach the age of consent (18 years of age) it may be important to consider whether you feel your child is capable of being his or her own Guardian (all personal decision-making) and/or Trustee (decisions regarding financial matters). This assessment can typically be completed only by a medical doctor or a registered psychologist.

About Tim

Timothy Baragar – Registered Psychologist

Tim has been in or around schools almost all of his life.  He has been a student, a teacher, a special educator, an administrator, a university professor of psychology and a psychologist. The common thread throughout his career has been a deep caring for students and their families coupled with a proven ability to work with schools and families to help them understand the child and how best to help them achieve success across all settings. Tim has worked with students and their families from ages two to twenty-two and provides assessments and consultations designed to inform, teach, and go beyond theory and into practical, realistic strategies. With over 30 years in education teaching and working with preschool through university students Tim brings a wealth of experience as an “insider” who is able to advocate for students and families trying to navigate the often confusing and contradictory world of education.

Tim provides assessments and consultation that involve meaningful observation, insightful interviews, and informative testing. He believes in a team approach that involves the family (including the child’s doctor if appropriate) and the school and that this approach needs to include the student whenever possible. Whether it is a PDD-AISH assessment, a psychoeducational assessment, an assessment for selected diagnostic conditions such as ADHD/ GAD/ LDs or ASD (among others), or even a Capacity Assessment for the Office of the Public Guardian you can be assured that Tim will be 100% committed to your child and will include you as a partner throughout the process.

What does an IQ Score mean?

IQ does matter. However, it is not all that matters. With all this talk about “intelligences” and other factors it is sometimes difficult to really determine what an IQ score is actually telling us about a student’s future and prospects for success. In fact, the very word success has so many sides to it that it becomes a useless term unless its multifaceted nature is considered. Read more…

What is a Capacity Assessment?

In the case of a Capacity Assessment I am asked to determine if I feel a person is able to be self-sufficient enough to retain their status as their own legal guardian There are several levels of “independence” in between completely independent and the forfeiture of guardianship/ trusteeship.  This can be thought of as a continuum.
